There are several reasons you may have for removing the pulley from an alternator. Most replacement alternators come with new pulleys attached, but some rebuilds may not. Sometimes, the pulley may have been damaged by something else (perhaps a slip with a tool) and require replacement while the alternator itself is fine. Whatever the reason, removing the alternator pulley requires special tools, specifically a pulley puller (say that three times fast).
