Often, when an engine begins overheating and the driver doesn’t hear the engine fan engage, the assumption is that the fan is broken. Sometimes it is, though most of the time it’s in the controls which engage the fan and allow coolant into the engine block. Regardless, it doesn’t hurt to check the fans and it is an easy diagnostic to run.
