Remember: the “mechanic in a can” isn’t a fix

Recently, a user in our Ask a Mechanic forum wanted to know whether he should change out the thermostat on his 2005 Chevrolet Malibu as it has been randomly getting hot (but not overheating) when driven. He indicated that he’d seen water in the oil and had used to cans of “seal block” in the car and replaced the oil, coolant, and plugs.
